Currency

The local currency is the South African Rand. South African currency consists of five notes, namely R200, R100, R50, R20 and R10. There are nine coins, namely R5, R2, R1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c and 1c.

Money can be exchanged into Rands either at banks or foreign exchange bureaux.

Most establishments have card facilities and you will be able to pay with your international credit card. Many hotels, shops and restaurants also accept travelers’ cheques, but it would be wise to confirm with the establishment beforehand whether or not this service is offered. Alternatively, you can exchange your travelers’ cheques for local currency at any bank.
